SAVVY was formed in early 1971 by drummer and vocalist Rick Miller and some school and neighborhood friends. Rick was a sophmore at Eastern Hills High School. By the time he was a senior, SAVVY was the house band at the "Gingerbread House" in Fort Worth. The format changed from rock-and-roll to a show/dance band. Rich Mauch joined SAVVY on guitar and vocals late in '72 and then SAVVY hit the road on the show circuit for three and a half years. "Savvy's Castle" featuring SAVVY opened in Arlington in '75 and by the summer of '77 had to move to a larger location with more parking in Fort Worth. The name changed To simply "Savvy's." Upon entrance of Steve Jones on vocals and guitar and Richard Jones on bass and vocals in '78, SAVVY began rocking and rolling once again. A few months later, Ricky Gregg joined SAVVY on guitar and vocals and brought with him several original songs.

On January 7, 1980 SAVVY submitted an entry tape for "Q102's More Texas Crude" and out of nearly 400 entries was selected for one of the ten tracks on the album. One of these ten groups was also to appear at the 1980 "Texxas Jamm." Only two days before the "Texxas Jamm," a battle of the bands was held in Dallas at the Agora Ballroom and SAVVY came out on top. Although they were denied their chance to open the show SAVVY continued to develop and progress. Dan Kostura joined SAVVY on keyboards and vocals in August of '80 to complete the sound of today's SAVVY.
